Description
Offered for sale is a stunning antique dark blue transferware sauce tureen with undertray manufactured in Staffordshire, England during the early 1800s. The sauce tureen is from Ralph Hall's Quadrupeds line and this piece features an Irish Setter on one side of the tureen with a rabbit on the other, and the tray displays a fox and rooster scene. The base of the tureen and the undertray are both marked with the Hall trademark and pattern name, and overall it stands about 7 1/4" tall to the tip of the finial while the tray measures approximately 7 7/8" in length from handle to handle. The overall condition of the sauce tureen is remarkable. The base is clean with a tiny chip to the edge of the foot and there are scattered glaze flakes to the handles and upper shoulder. There are no cracks or areas of repair. The lid is also beautiful with no chips, cracks, or areas of restoration. There is just a tiny flake near the opening for the ladle and some other very minor glaze flakes to the finial and edge of the lid. The undertray is near perfect with just a few glaze skips on the surface that have minor toning.
The white earthenware is bright and the blue color is deep with nice contrast. The glaze is glossy with crazing noted on the lid and undertray. All pieces are the correct match! Please be sure to check out my other auctions for more great items!
